SEI proactively engages company leadership and/or boards on your behalf to foster collaboration and productive dialogue on priority issues. SD Guthrie Bhd. is a Malaysia-based company operating in the food products industry, primarily known for its palm oil production. The company came under scrutiny in December 2020 when the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued an import ban on its palm oil due to credible evidence of forced labor practices. Sustainalytics began engaging with the company in Q1 2021 following these allegations. Objective: End forced labour practices and improve transparency and grievance mechanisms. Key outcomes: ● SD Guthrie has made substantial progress in remediating these issues. Transparency was a key focus, with SD Guthrie publishing annual Modern Slavery Statements, detailed Sustainability Reports, and public disclosures of grievance and resolution data. ● These efforts culminated in the lifting of the CBP import ban in February 2023, a positive post-verification assessment by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in May 2023, and the 100% RSPO certification of its mills in 2024.
